Eclipse

Everything was quiet in the large bedroom. Peacefully silent. And he was grateful for the small respite, since his life and his mind had been in a constant state of chaos and turmoil these last number of weeks.

Where many would have found the silence heavy and oppressive, he found the silence enjoyable. It was calming to the point where he was allowed to slowly piece together the frayed edges of his life and mind. All in time for the next bout of chaos.

"What are you thinking?"

So absorbed in what he was feeling Whyte hadn't even noticed at what point Juli had awoken and rolled onto her side, studying his profile. In fact his mind hadn't even registered the words leaving her mouth, only that she had spoken and that those words had been directed at him. He made her repeat herself.

"I said, what are you thinking? You just have this really far away look on your face."

"I was...I was just thinking..." For a moment Whyte wasn't sure he could articulate his exact feelings. "I was just thinking...you make me happy."

Whyte continued to stare at the ceiling fan as it rotated lazily above their heads. He could sense Juli's movements just before the soft skin of her legs became intertwined with his and her arm moved across his torso, hugging his body to hers.

"You make it sound like that's a bad thing." There was the soft presence of sleep tinging her voice.

"Maybe it is."

Juli didn't move. He hadn't really expected much of a reaction from her, she just saw things in a different light than he did.

"Why?" That word so simply spoken, and carrying all the weight of her belief that he was just having one of his philosophical moments. If he looked at her now he would see that her eyes were closed, not quite ready to approach the day.

"Because it's a dangerous thing--happiness. You can hurt me more than anyone or anything now."

The soft murmur of her voice was the only response he received. She had fallen back into dreams, lulled by the warmth of his flesh and the early hour of the morning.

Outside their small apartment, and far beyond the city landscape of impressive skyscrapers, day broke across the horizon.
